Although not a national holiday, every year the third Monday of February is designated as Canada's Heritage Day. In 1973, Heritage Canada -- The National Trust established this day (and the following heritage week) to: "encourage the preservation and promotion of Canada's nationally significant historic, architectural, natural and scenic heritage... a time for Canadians across the country to explore and celebrate their own personal heritage." In Ontario, this day has been designated Family Day.
What better way to celebrate our own Cantley heritage and families, than with a trip down memory lane... and a "trip down the old Cantley Road"... on the last Sunday of Heritage Week!
Last year, as part of Cantley 1889's annual meeting, we invited all Cantley residents and others from some of Cantley's earliest families to bring photos and memorabilia to an afternoon celebrating our past. After a brief meeting, guests enjoyed an illustrated talk. Most importantly, this day gave Cantley residents, young and old, a chance to meet each other and enjoy the displays and home-made refreshments. We had many requests for this to become an annual event.
So, on Sunday, February 23rd, at 2 p.m., we invite you to our 2nd Annual Family Heritage Day at St Elizabeth's Parish Hall. Bob McClelland will be taking us on "A Trip Down the Old Cantley Road" with his talk, stories and photos. We hope that after last year's success, even more people will be encouraged to bring family photos and treasures from bygone years for our display tables and, of course, you can look at these while enjoying delicious home-made refreshments. All members, residents and special guests from Cantley's original families are invited to attend.
Your membership (or renewal) will encourage us in our work to "discover, catalogue, protect and promote" Cantley's built and natural heritage. For $15 a year ($25 for 2 years) your family can show its support by joining Cantley 1889's membership. Of course, if you are interested, volunteer help is always welcome too.
At 2 p.m., Cantley 1889's 3rd annual meeting will take place. Reports of Cantley 1889's 2013 activities will be distributed to members and a brief election held for our Board of Directors. Nominations are open to all members until Feb. 23/14 - contact: info.cantley1889@gmail.com.
